William Bradshaw
A native of St. Clairsville, Bill Bradshaw made NCAA history in 1953 and 1954 when he led the NCAA College Division in punting both seasons, the first player ever to lead the nation in punting in consecutive years.
Voted Team MVP in each of those seasons, Bradshaw did it all for the BGSU football team his junior and senior season. In 1953, Bradshaw quarterbacked the Falcons, and was named to the All-Ohio team by UPI and second team All-MAC, despite the team’s 1-8 record. The next year, Bradshaw spent time at both quarterback and halfback, earning All-Ohio honors for the latter. He led the team in passing, rushing and punt return yards that season.
His career punting average of 42.2 yards for 126 kicks established school records since broken, however, his 19.0 yards per completion from 1952-54 still is a school career record. He was a second-team All-MAC performer at quarterback.
In track, he competed in the pole vault and high jump and was a MAC scorer in both events. In 1953, he also was asked to join the swimming team and scored in three meets. Following his BGSU career, he was drafted by the Baltimore Colts.
Bradshaw was inducted into the BG Athletic Hall of Fame in 1987. He passed away on January 25, 2007 in Columbus, Ohio at the age of 75.
