A native Texan, Mike Weger moved to Bowling Green from Oklahoma when he was in seventh grade. He graduated from Bowling Green High School in 1963, and stayed in town for college, starting at defensive back on Doyt Perry's last Falcon football team in 1964. The Falcons won the MAC title that year, and shared the crown with Miami(OH) in 1965, as Weger earned second team All-American honors from the Associated Press.
He earned honorable mention All-American honors the next year, in addition to his second straight Team MVP award and first team All-MAC honors. He was also invited to play in the Senior Bowl and Blue-Gray all-star games at the end of the year. He was drafted in the ninth round by the Detroit Lions, playing 11 seasons in the NFL, including two appearances on the All-Pro team.
His father, Roy, was the band director at BGSU from 1953-1965, and scored "Ay Ziggy Zoomba", the unofficial fight song of BG athletics. In 1968, Mike Weger appeared in the movie "Paper Lion" with Alan Alda, and brought further notoriety to the fight song, singing it for his teammates during a training camp scene.
In April 2006, Weger made a sizeable donation to the Sebo Athletic Center project, and a training room in the new facility will be named in his honor, while seating for the Falcon Marching Band will be named after his late father.
He was inducted to the BG Athletic Hall of Fame in 1972.
