One of the great wrestlers in the history of Bowling Green, Jim Hoppel compiled an amazing 28-1-1 record in his last three years, including three straight MAC championships. Most impressive was his junior year of 1960, as Hoppel went undefeated (10-0-0). He also became the first Falcon to score points at the NCAA meet.

After graduation, he started the wrestling program at Chagrin Falls H.S. in northeast Ohio, and served as a graduate assistant at Bowling Green. He left Ohio for a year to coach wrestling and football at Fort Hayes College in Kansas, but returned to BG in 1972, serving as an assistant coach under Bruce Bellard and teaching physical education at Bowling Green High School.

He was inducted to the BG Athletic Hall of Fame in 1969.
