Phil Koester was named MAC "Diver of the Year" the first two years the award was given in 1982 and 1983. A four-year MAC champion of the men's one-meter diving event, Koester also won the three-meter event his last three years at Bowling Green, setting a meet record in that event his senior year.

He was inducted to the BG Athletic Hall of Fame in 1990.
