Ralph Eakins captured MAC titles in the 100-meter and 200-meter backstroke events in 1956, and repeated the 200-meter win in 1958. He also was part of the 1958 MAC champion 400-meter medley relay team. In between, he won the 1,650-meter freestyle event in 1957. Eakins was the first BG swimmer to earn All-American honors in 1957, a feat he repeated as a senior the next year.

He graduated in 1958, and was inducted to the BG Athletic Hall of Fame in 1988.
