For the second episode of the podcast, Grant and I recapped the Buffalo and FIU football games, and discussed the upcoming game with Kent State, as well as future matchups with Ohio U. and Ohio State. We also talked about the “hidden gem” on the campus of BGSU, the Athletic Archives room in Memorial Hall. Mickey Cochrane, who came to BG in the 1960’s to coach the lacrosse and soccer teams, and later had the soccer stadium named in his honor, is the sole curator of the Archives room, and shared with me some stories about the people, places and events that have shaped the history of BGSU.
One story Mickey told was about the live falcon that used to fly at basketball and football games on campus, and Grant made contact with John Blakeman, the original falconer in charge of “Prince Frederick”, the falcon that flew at BG games. Look for more from Grant and Mr. Blakeman in a future edition of “Rolling Along”!
Congratulations are also in order to freshman football player Jarett Sanderson and junior volleyball player Stephanie Swiger, who earned player of the week honors in the MAC East for their respective sports. Sanderson led the defensive charge against Florida International, with a fumble recovery for a touchdown and two interceptions, his second coming in the endzone on the final play of the game to seal the Falcon victory. Swiger, who’s father played baseball at BGSU, led the Falcons to a tournament win in Youngstown, as they improved their record on the season to 10-2 overall.
While we didn’t find time to fit the “BGSUsports.com Falcon Fact of the Week” into the podcast itself, the Falcons face their “sister school”, Kent State, this Saturday at Doyt L. Perry Stadium. BGSU leads the all-time series 52-15-6, and has won five in a row, and 28 of the last 31 meetings with the Golden Flashes. The BG record for interceptions in a game by a single player is three, which eight players have accomplished 10 times. Three of those times were against Kent State.
